Fitch's Cool Bio

So as many of our fellow bloggers have already analyzed ad nauseam, George Fitch is running for governor, apparently against Jerry Kilgore for the Republican nomination, or perhaps not. But I just wanted to link to his website, and comment that you have to admit he has a far more entertaining biography than Jerry Kilgore has.

First, he coached the Jamaican bobsled team in the 1988 Calgary Olympics, immortalized by the movie Cool Runnings, starring John Candy, who plays George Fitch's character apparently.

Secondly, as Reagan's consul to Belize and commercial trade attache to Jamaica and France, he has significant foreign policy experience compared to Jerry Kilgore. Perhaps Fitch should be running for Ambassador to the U.N. or something.

Finally, and perhaps coolest of all, Fitch was born in Canton, China to a missionary family during the Communist Revolution. His father served in the OSS during World War II in China and also served with General Chennault's Flying Tigers. His grandfather, who wrote a book, called My Eighty Years in China was provost of Nanking during the Rape of Nanking in 1937.

How will the nomination be decided? In a primary or at the state convention? I could never understand how within the RPV, some battles are decided in a primary (ie Warner vs Miller in 96) and others are decided in the state convention (ie Miller vs North in 94, or 2001 Gov race).

It will be a primary. The manner of nomination is decided by a vote of the Republican Party of Virginia State Central Committee.

Jerry Kilgore indicated that he would prefer a primary, and that was pretty much all she wrote.

Well I must agree that Mr Fitch's bio is impressive. When I took the time to actually read what he stood for at his website (www.georgefitch.com) I was extremely impressed. Have you read about "The Warrenton Miracle?" Take the time to read what he stands for and then come back and comment before looking at him superfically merely at his bio. If this man can lower taxes and increase revenues on a local level I bet he can do it on a state level as well. Why have another attorney run our state when we can have such a successful proven business man like George Fitch. After all who would you rather trust your money to? An attorney or a MBA businessman?

I think Kilgore's the man, but it doesn't hurt to have Fitch in the process. Fitch joins Connaughton (running for Lt. Governor)as the two statewide candidates who have actually had to run a government prior to the statewide race. That kind of experience (at least with good results) is in very short supply and deserves a close look. Both men have validated the principle that, if the dead hand of taxation is substantially eased, the climate for growth is improved and revenues for core functions are amply available at lower rates. I think Connaughton's achievement is substantially more impressive, given how far he has brought a very large (around 350,000), diverse jurisdiction racked with a lot of urban/suburban problems, but the point that arches over this is that there are a few folks in the state who actually have done more than just jabber about taxes. Two of them are in the Republican primary. This is a refreshing contrast to the Chinese fire drill (can we still say that?) aspects of the General Assembly's blow-hard antics.

George Fitch is gaining momentum fast. I have seen and heard him a few times and people are coming away with that WOW feeling that politicians have not sparked around the Comonwealth since Ronald Reagan ran for the Presidency. Fitch sounds like a real, no-nonsense business manager who will kick ass and take names in our sleepy old Virginia government. I would love to see Tim Kaine get a thorough verbal lashing by George Fitch. Fitch is much quicker on his feet than Kaine is and I think Kaine would quickly wither under the facts about government waste presented with such force and panache by the internationally educated, George Fitch. I can't wait for the November campaign so we can say, "Tim Kaine: Do you want him to do to Virginia what he did for Richmond?" Richmond did nothing but fall further into decline under Kaine's "leadership." George Fitch is such a refreshing contrast to Kaine. George Fitch really changed his city for the better while Kaine watched the Capital of the Confederacy turn into a drug dealer paradise.
