The Race to Replace Chap Peterson in the 37th

The Republican primary race in the 37th to put up a candidate in Chap Peterson's old house district has become rather controversial as of late. Jim Kaplan, a recent addition to the race, has been endorsed by Jeannemarie Devolites Davis, whose Senate district engulfs most of the house district represented by Chap Peterson until he resigned to run for the Democratic LG nomination. Kaplan was recently informed by the campaign manager of John Mason, his primary opponent, that Mason had been endorsed by Rep. Tom Davis, the husband of Devolites. Word is that Davis and Devolites don't always endorse the same candidates and that they both have a friendship with Mason, but it was still surprising. After several phone calls were made, it was discovered that Davis has NOT endorsed Mason and that he needs to explain why he claimed Davis's endorsement.

What is perhaps even more questionable is that Mason apparently made a donation to the Tim Kaine for Governor campaign in 2003. It is outlined here by VPAP. Although it is admittedly a small donation, either Mason did not realize he was at a Democratic fundraiser which is obviously ridiculous and would invalidate his campaign in and of itself, or more likely he is trying to position himself to gain some Democratic support in the general campaign should he win the GOP primary.

There was also the dust-up between Mason and Sharon Bulova, friend of Mason and mother of his possible opponent.

Fairfax City's elections are non-partisan, so Mason ruled that roost for a long time with very little partisan identification. He's a nice man, very smart and collegial, but only a very nominal Republican. If elected, he'd function as Del. Dillard did, I suspect.

kaplan's actually been in the race for a while (much longer than mason). he's not particularly conservative, though, so it looks like 4 mod-lib candidates vying for this seat. disappointing. :(

Mason is more conservative than Dillard. For one thing he is not a wholly-owned subsidiary of the VEA.

But at the end of the day, this is not a seat that will elect a Ken Cuccinelli. Precincts of it might, but the district as a whole is very swing. Mason or Kaplan would be a vote for the GOP Speaker and a vote with the GOP on a lot of issues. Better than Bulova or the other Dem.

Mason is probably the best choice for GOPers in the long run. He matches up better in a head to head with the Democrats based on his experience. He can talk transportation which is key in a Fairfax district. But Mason is not a young man. If Kaplan were to be reasonably graceful here, he could have a clean shot at this seat in 2 or 3 terms which would give him more time to build his bonifides in the district.

Jim Kaplan is really working hard for this seat. He has knocked on over 4000 doors and written over 1000 personal letters to those he has met.

He has recruited an impressive number of volunteers to his side to boot--I am one of them. We Republicans need Kaplan's energy and enthusiasm. We need to win close seats like this--especially in Fairfax County.

John Mason gave Tim Kaine $35. It is not required for a campaign to declare contributions $100 or less. Perhaps Mason thought Kaine would not declare the contribution and so he could give without public knowledge.

I don't know if he was "informed" otherwise, but all of the Fairfax County GOP Cmte heard about it at the Tuesday night membership meeting.

Look, folks. You have a choice here. If Kaplan wins, the Democrats will retain this seat. If Mason wins, he is an odds-on favorite to defeat either Bulova or Oleszek, which means one more head in the House Republican Caucus.
Either Dem is a very strong candidate, so nominating an unknown like Kaplan over an old hand like Mason would be a very dumb thing, even for the GOP.

Didn't Mason lose his last election by double-digits as the incumbent?

Look, Mason isn't all he used to be. I think we need some young blood in here. And the fact that Kaplan was willing to take on Petersen while Mason wasn't means alot to me.

Go with the guy that has guts not the political opportunist.

You guys are all showing you are not that familiar with Northern Virginia politics. That $35 donation was a dirty-trick by the Kaine team that snared many Northern Virginia Republicans. There was even an article in the Post on it back in 2003. It wasn't a secret then and it's not a secret now.

I would think the GOP could see through the Democratic dirty tricks. Instead, we take the low road and eat our own. The Dems in NoVa will laugh all the way to their new elected positions about how Kaine snookered the GOP.

Reagan must be turning over in his grave....

The Kaine donation might not be much - but Mason said at the Fairfax City meeting last night he's also donated to Bulova (D) and former County Chair Kate Hanley (D). Not sure why the guy is proud to be a donor to Democrats in the area.

Sometimes I think Kate and Sharon were the closest things to Republicans on the BOS....maybe that's why.

Kate Hanley is like a Republican? That's a new one on me. She may not be as far left as Dean, but she's no Republican.

My understanding is that Davis had endorsed Mason in a previous campaign and Mason got confused and thought that still applied to the current campaign.
