Republican Realignment?

Over at NRO, Jonah Goldberg asks the important and pertinent question, "What will the Republicans Do?" A sample:

President Bush has put himself in the awkward position of asking his base to trust him at precisely the moment the base was expecting Bush to demonstrate their trust was well-founded in the first place. For this reason and others, the Miers nomination has opened up several crisscrossing fissures on the Right...

Almost prophetically, The Economist (subscription required) also asks whether a Republican shift might be underway. It is prophetic because the issue went to print before the Miers announcement, and the divisions it highlights are precisely those now at issue.

There looks to be a good deal of soul-searching in store for the GOP.
