Rehnquist? and Stevens?

With Bob Novak's column, and various internet accounts, I'm beginning to think there's something to the Rehnquist retiring rumors.

For the crazy option, there's this tidbit on The Corner:
In the last half hour the new rumor that is keeping political geeks awake: Rehnquist and Stevens resign tomorrow. (Up until a little ago, the buzz was Renquist, as I noted in Bench Memos.)
It seems implausible, but I assume the logic would be that with three vacancies, President Bush would face a lot of pressure to moderate his choices.

Pressure to moderate with three vacancies? Who are those pundits kidding! The pressure is already there with one!

My hope is Bush says "to hell with the pressure" and starts acting like he has a majority in the House and Senate. It would be high time to ram three conservatives down the Dems collective open mouths. Maybe then they'll shut-up.

Maybe our own George could give him some advice about "knocking their soft teeth down their whiney throats"

You know, I did "predict" precisely this trio to retire this summer.

The more I think about it, the more I think the Stevens rumor is just wishful thinking by conservatives. It just doesn't make any sense.

There's no way Bush submits three conservatives anyway. We're looking at two retirees -- just like you mention, addision -- and one will be moderate and one will be conservative to "balance the court."

Bush lacks the "poltical capital" (dare I write the word I really am thinking?) to do anything different.
