Opening Day 2005

Can anyone tell me why this is NOT a national holiday?

Baseball's opening day is one of the most exciting days of the year as hope springs eternal for 30 teams and millions of fans all across this great land of ours. Despite all the ups and downs, baseball is still our National Pastime and I can't help feeling like I'm 6 years old again this time every year.

I just watched my beloved Detroit Tigers (it's a long story) lay the royal smack-down on Kansas City, 11-2. Dmitri Young became the third player ever to hit 3 home runs on opening day. Jeremy Bonderman became MLB's youngest opening day starter since Doc Gooden in 1986 and looked like a #1 pitcher with 7Ks and 1 earned run in 7 innings. My favorite Tiger, Lynchburg, Va's Brandon Inge, also had a two-run homer and a couple nice defensive plays at 3rd base.

I can't wait to hear about John Behan's trip to Cincinnati after seeing the Reds come back to beat Pedro Martinez's Mets 7-6.
